The topic of inserts and effects sends came up in a recent post on the message board here, so I thought I'd write a permanent article to explain the difference and how they are typically used in recording or mixing applications.

Common, or "standard", microphone choices for drums
One of the most popular questions that beginning recording enthusiasts ask is "What microphone should I use to record _blank_?", where blank is an instrument or voice or whatever it is they want to record. In this series of articles, I'll cover some of the more common or "standard" microphone choices that you'll find in professional studios that are used for your typical rock/pop instruments. This first article will cover drums.

Why your mixes sound soft compared to commercial releases
Recently I had an artist ask me why the mixes he does in his home studio sound so much softer than the commercially released music he buys. I thought that everyone already knew about the whole "loudness wars" craze that has been going on since the late 1990s, but apparently there are still many people that don't know about this, or know how to make their mixes that loud.
So, here is a quick primer on the loudness wars, and how to get in the competition (if you desire to).

Making the most out of Loops with ACID
To help promote the LoopLibrary.com
site, I put together an "8 pack" of free loops to be given
away on Sony's ACIDplanet web
site. The trick is that they always showcase a song made with just
the 8 loops in the "8 pack", so I had to put together an
interesting song with just 8 loops by pulling out all the stops and
making the most of Sony's ACID software. The following is a tutorial about how
I used ACID to create the short song "Funk Me". Many of
these tricks can be applied in other software applications as well.

Contemporary Vocal Sound Techniques
Often on newgroups or forums, people will ask how to achieve a
certain vocal sound. The following is my reply to one such post
where someone was looking to achieve that contemporary up front, in your
face sound, that is also wide (stereo) sounding and has some depth to
it.

Maximizing your Recording Budget
This was reprinted from an old booklet I used to send out for free. Even though it's old, the ideas still apply and some comments have been added to bring it up to date. This is a LONG article which also presents a great overview of the whole recording process for those who haven't done much recording before.
