Just a quick article to provide some links to a couple of music business directories that I think are worth checking out! Full reviews of these directories will be coming as soon as I have the time to go through them completely.
I've heard quite a few good things about these directories from a variety of musicians and other music industry professionals that I work with, but I never got around to checking them out because I'm more of a recording engineer and producer, and spend very little of my time working on my own music. I'm not trying to be an artist and get my music heard, and purchased, by the masses, so I didn't think these books would fill any particular need for me. However, recently I've been concentrating more of my time producing some of my own specialty market music and video products, and thought some of these directories may be a good resource to check out.
THE INDIE BIBLE: Now in its eigth edition, this publication is basically a HUGE list of resources and contact information that would be extremely valuable to the independent musician, record label, or anyone trying to get their music out to the masses. It also has a few short articles at the end with some helpful information as well. It comes in either a soft bound printed edition, or an electronically delivered edition (or, you can get both at the same time for a discount). The electronic version of the eigth edition has 1140 pages! Here is what it contains:
- 4200 publications that will REVIEW your music!
- 3600 radio stations that will PLAY your songs!
- 600 services that will help you to SELL your music!
- 350 sites where you can UPLOAD your band's MP3s or videos!
- and 50 articles that will help your music career to SUCCEED!
The listings are also arrange by style and region (North America, South America, Europe, Australia, and Asia, as appropriate), which is very helpful.
All in all, it looks to be a very good resource that I'll be going through in quite some more detail in the very near future!

THE GALARIS MUSICIANS DIRECTORY:
Although, at first, this directory appears similar to the Indie Bible, they cover quite a few different areas, and thus the two publications are very complimentary to each other. In addition, The GMD, is not a book, or even an e-book, but it's software that allows you to quickly search specific categories and locations for what you are looking for.
In their own words, "The GMID is not merely another PDF music industry directory, but a dynamic online software organized in a way that will save you time and money. First, select the category you wish to browse from, then select the state to see the listings for your selected category and click the active links to immediately go to the website of your desired contact or to send them an email."
There are more than 15,000 listings in the following categories, which you can find in the GMD (according to their web site): - Booking Agents
- Clubs & Venues
- Disc Manufacturers
- Distributors
- Legal Services
- Magazines
- Managers
- Music Retailers
- Photographers
- Promoters
- Publicists
- Publishers
- Radio Stations
- Record Labels
- Music Schools
- Studios
- Video & Sound Production
If you are serious about getting your music out and exposed to the masses, then the Indie Bible and the Galaris Music Directory, would both be very valuable resources, and well worth the relatively low cost for all the work put into them!
